Mount Vernon History
Perhaps better known than the town itself is the Mount Vernon Estate, the plantation home of George Washington. The estate’s land had been in the Washington family since 1674 and expanded when George Washington became the owner in 1761. A beautiful mansion built in the Palladian style, the estate remained Washington’s country house until the time of his death. A popular tourist destination, visitors can also check out nearby George Washington’s Distillery and Gristmill, which was in the business of whiskey making and milling. During Washington’s lifetime, it was the largest distillery in America.

Mount Vernon residents also enjoy the privilege of being a short drive away from the delicious restaurants of Alexandria. For familiar Mexican fare, locals love El Paso, an upbeat restaurant and cantina with colorful décor. El Paso is known for its speedy and friendly customer service and even offers military discounts and kids night deals on Mondays.
